Chinese President Xi Jinping and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan were among the BRICS leaders who did not attend a dinner hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the first day of the summit.
According to foreign media reports, Xi arrived in New Delhi on Saturday afternoon to attend the BRICS leaders’ summit. During his visit, he also held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi, with the two leaders discussing matters of mutual interest and strengthening relations between China and India.
People familiar with the matter said Xi decided to skip the dinner because he was feeling tired and fatigued after a long flight and the time difference. Despite missing the evening gathering, the Chinese president continued with his other official engagements in New Delhi.
The absence of Sheikh Khaled from the dinner also drew attention as several other BRICS leaders attended the event hosted by Modi.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was among the leaders who joined the dinner, along with other senior officials. Federal ministers and chief ministers from several Indian states also attended the gathering, which took place at Bharat Mandapam in central New Delhi.
The ministers and chief ministers travelled from Parliament House to Bharat Mandapam in two buses for the dinner. The venue served as one of the main locations for the BRICS summit and other official engagements.
The two-day BRICS summit concluded on Sunday night after bringing together leaders from the group’s 11 member states and 10 partner countries. Representatives from several international organisations also participated in the summit.
The meeting focused on a range of regional and global issues, including economic cooperation, international trade, development, and coordination among emerging economies. The participation of a large number of member and partner countries highlighted the expanding role of the BRICS grouping in global affairs.
