40°C heat or rain? What awaits Karachi today?

Karachi is likely to experience light rain today, although hot and humid weather is expected to continue across the city, with temperatures forecast to reach up to 40°C.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 38°C and 40°C during the next 24 hours, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 27.5°C.

Humidity levels have reached around 75%, contributing to uncomfortable and muggy conditions. Winds remained calm in the city during the morning.

A weather analyst said thunderstorm clouds could develop over Karachi’s suburban areas after noon, potentially bringing gusty winds, thunderstorms and rain to several locations.

Areas including the M-9 corridor, DHA, Gadap and Dumba Goth may experience showers accompanied by strong winds. Similar conditions are possible in Scheme 33, Malir, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Port Qasim and Steel Town.

Other parts of Karachi also have a 45% to 60% possibility of receiving light to moderate rainfall, according to the forecast.

However, widespread or extremely heavy rain is not currently expected in the city. The analyst said the ongoing intense heat could contribute to the formation of localised clouds and trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms.

The weather department has also reported that a monsoon low-pressure system formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Odisha before moving towards South Chhattisgarh and nearby regions.

The system is expected to continue moving westward and could bring rain and thunderstorms to different parts of Sindh through September 16.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has advised relevant departments to take precautionary measures and remain alert during the anticipated weather spell.
