Abu Dhabi has introduced dedicated number plates for self-driving vehicles as part of its efforts to support the development of autonomous transport and smart mobility.

According to local authorities, the newly launched number plates will make it easier to identify both trial and commercially operated driverless vehicles on the roads. Officials said the initiative aims to improve monitoring, regulation and public awareness as autonomous vehicle technology continues to expand across the emirate.

Vehicles operating under commercial autonomous transport services will display number plates bearing the words “Auto Drive,” allowing road users and authorities to distinguish them from conventional vehicles.

The move forms part of Abu Dhabi’s broader strategy to integrate advanced transportation technologies, enhance road safety and prepare the infrastructure for the wider adoption of autonomous mobility solutions. Authorities expect the new identification system to facilitate the safe rollout and regulation of driverless vehicle services in the future.
