Americans fear AI could threaten humanity

A new US survey shows that many Americans are worried that artificial intelligence (AI) could one day pose a serious threat to humanity.

According to a survey of 2,064 American adults released by US political outlet Politico around six in 10 respondents believe AI could potentially contribute to human extinction.

The findings highlight growing public concerns about the rapid development of AI and its possible risks.

How serious is the risk?

When asked about the possibility of AI causing human extinction, 17% of respondents said it was “almost certain.” Another 20% described it as a “significant risk,” while 26% considered it “somewhat of a risk.”

Meanwhile, 15% said there was very little risk, while 7% believed there was no risk at all. Another 15% were unsure.

Americans divided over AI development

The survey also found differences among supporters of US President Donald Trump. About 44% said they supported slowing or stopping AI development while 40% believed AI progress should continue because the technology could still provide major benefits.

The results show that while AI is attracting interest for its potential benefits many Americans remain concerned about its long term impact on society and humanity.
