Bilawal nominates Amjad Hussain as PPP’s choice for Gilgit‑Baltistan CM

On Saturday, PPP revealed it had reached an agreement with the Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML‑N) to form the next government in Gilgit‑Baltistan.

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has nominated Advocate Amjad Hussain, the party’s provincial president in Gilgit‑Baltistan, as the next chief minister of the region.

The announcement was made in a post on X, where PPP confirmed Bilawal had spoken to Amjad by phone to convey the decision. Bilawal also issued instructions regarding government formation and emphasized the implementation of citizens’ constitutional and economic rights.

On Saturday, PPP revealed it had reached an agreement with the Pakistan Muslim League‑Nawaz (PML‑N) to form the next government in Gilgit‑Baltistan. Under the arrangement, PPP will hold the chief minister’s office, while PML‑N will take the posts of governor, opposition leader, and deputy speaker in the G‑B Assembly.

PPP emerged as the largest party in the 24‑member assembly with a majority of seats, followed by PML‑N with six. The Istehkam‑e‑Pakistan Party (IPP) became the third‑largest group after four independents joined its ranks.

At the national level, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated PPP on its position as the leading party in G‑B and indicated that PML‑N would sit in opposition but support PPP in forming the government. Bilawal welcomed the cooperation, calling it a continuation of democratic norms and pledging to address governance challenges and public concerns in the region.
