Islamabad: Huge expenditure on the K IV water supply project has failed to bring the project to completion, prompting a National Assembly committee to form a four member investigation panel to find out why the scheme remains unfinished and where the delays occurred.
The Standing Committee on Water Resources appointed the sub committee under the convenorship of MNA Muhammad Idrees to investigate the non completion of the K IV project despite the large amount of money already spent on it.
The decision raises serious questions about project management, delays and the use of public funds. The committee has ordered an investigation, but the information presented at the meeting did not mention the total amount spent, the reasons for the delay or any person or organisation found responsible.
The committee held its 14th meeting at Parliament House in Islamabad at 2pm under the chairmanship of MNA Ahmad Atteeq Anwer.
Water theft from the Kachhi Canal also came under scrutiny. The committee directed the concerned authorities to explain whether reports of water theft had been sent to the relevant departments and whether any action had been taken to stop it.
Officials have been given one week to submit a detailed report explaining the status of the matter and the steps taken so far.
The committee’s demand is aimed at finding out whether the reported water theft was properly reported and whether the responsible departments acted on the complaints. No details were provided about the amount of water stolen, those allegedly involved or any confirmed action against them.
The committee also discussed the WAPDA Act, 1958. Members were informed that the law currently contains no specific legal provisions defining the creation, jurisdiction, powers or duties of WAPDA’s security setup.
After discussion, the committee decided to postpone consideration of the proposed bill until its next meeting.
The meeting focused on three important matters: the unfinished K IV project despite heavy spending, alleged water theft from the Kachhi Canal and the legal powers of WAPDA’s security setup.
