Birth control pills cause hormonal fluctuations in women

Manchester – Scientists have claimed based on a recent study that women who use birth control pills experience not only greater fluctuations in hormone levels but also a decrease in estrogen levels and an increase in progesterone levels.

The study also found that excessive use of birth control pills may be harmful for some women. Researchers from the United States and Canada led by Kelly L. Klump of Michigan State University presented the findings of a 49-day study involving 422 women.

The research indicated that the use of these pills was associated with negative effects including mood disturbances and increased stress. Birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin.

According to the researchers, these synthetic hormones can remain in the body for several hours to several days. The researchers emphasized that further studies are needed to determine which women are more likely to be affected by these pills and whether alternative contraceptive methods could reduce the associated risks and side effects.
