Canada lauds Pakistan’s role in US–Iran breakthrough

Canada has appreciated Pakistan’s “constructive and positive role” in facilitating diplomatic engagement between the United States

ISLAMABAD: Canada has appreciated Pakistan’s “constructive and positive role” in facilitating diplomatic engagement between the United States and Iran, following the recent understanding reached between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the acknowledgement came during a telephone conversation between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand.

During the call, the Canadian foreign minister commended Pakistan’s efforts in supporting mediation and dialogue, which helped create conditions for the US–Iran understanding. She said Pakistan played an important role in encouraging diplomatic engagement between the two sides.

Both leaders also discussed the upcoming diplomatic engagement scheduled in Bürgenstock, Switzerland, where further talks between the United States and Iran are expected to continue.

The Foreign Office said that Ishaq Dar and Anita Anand reviewed bilateral relations and expressed satisfaction over the positive momentum in Pakistan–Canada ties. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including trade, diplomacy, and development.

Pakistan has recently been credited by several international partners for its facilitation role in easing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The US and Iran have already moved toward a framework agreement that includes a phased reduction in hostilities and the start of formal negotiations.

Diplomatic sources say the agreement marks a significant shift in regional tensions, with Pakistan emerging as a key facilitator in backchannel diplomacy efforts.

Further developments are expected as the peace process moves toward formal negotiations in Switzerland.
