Actress and model Cara Delevingne has opened up about the darkest chapter of her life, revealing that she nearly lost her life due to a drug overdose before finally committing to recovery. In a candid interview, the star spoke about the harrowing experience of being medically weaned off GBL, a powerful drug she described as “probably the hardest one to come off.”
“It went super quiet. Everyone went very silent. And I knew I needed to get sober, so I medically was weaned off GBL, which probably is the hardest one to come off,” Delevingne said. “But I couldn’t do it at home. I couldn’t deal because the more sober I got, the more I realised how badly I f—- up, and that just was too much.”
The model and actress admitted that when she woke up in the hospital after her near-fatal experience, she felt guilt rather than relief. A source close to Delevingne explained: “For Cara, recovery wasn’t just about stopping drugs. It meant confronting everything she had been trying to escape, and that’s often the hardest part of getting well.” Another insider told Radar Online: “Cara has never hidden how difficult recovery has been, but speaking so openly about almost losing her life shows how determined she is to remove the stigma around addiction. She knows her experience could encourage others to seek help before reaching a crisis point.”
Delevingne also reflected on the widely circulated photos taken after the 2022 Burning Man festival that sparked concern among fans. She confirmed: “(I was) mentally unwell for sure, not lack of sleep. I’d just had a seizure. I was not sober, for sure.” The viral photos also cost her modeling contracts. “Yeah, it’s not a good look. As a model, you’re meant to upkeep the brand’s standards in some way. Like, it’s in contracts that you sign. So, they didn’t directly fire me because of it, but they didn’t renew contracts,” she shared.
Delevingne’s openness about her struggles has been praised by fans and advocates alike, with many commending her bravery in speaking out about the realities of addiction. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking help and breaking the stigma surrounding substance abuse. As she continues her recovery journey, Delevingne remains committed to using her platform to encourage others to seek the support they need before reaching a crisis point.
