Celebrating legacy of Qawwal Aziz Mian on birth anniversary

Renowned Qawwal and poet Aziz Mian was fondly remembered on the occasion of his birth anniversary, marking a day to honor his remarkable contributions to music and poetry.

Born as Abdul Aziz in Delhi on April 17, 1942, he migrated to Pakistan from Meerut in 1947 during the tumultuous period of independence.

Educated at the University of Punjab in Lahore, Aziz Mian attained degrees in Persian, Urdu literature, and Arabic, laying the foundation for his profound understanding of language and culture.

Aziz Mian’s musical prowess and devotion to his craft set him apart in the realm of Qawwali. He holds the distinction of singing the longest commercially released Qawwali, extending beyond an impressive 115 minutes.

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Aziz Mian not only recited the verses of other poets but also penned his own lyrics, adding a unique dimension to his performances. His journey to musical acclaim began under the guidance of Abdul Wahid Khan of Lahore, starting from the tender age of 10, culminating in his breakthrough performance in 1966.

A pivotal moment in Aziz Mian’s career came when he received a gold medal from the Shah of Iran for his captivating performance at a ceremony in 1966. This recognition propelled him into the limelight, leading to the release of numerous albums and widespread acclaim.

Alongside his mastery of Qawwali, Aziz Mian showcased his versatility by excelling in Ghazals, further solidifying his status as a distinguished figure in the world of music.

In acknowledgment of his significant contributions, Aziz Mian was posthumously awarded the Pride of Performance by the government of Pakistan in 1989. His legacy continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, and his memory remains cherished by admirers of Sufi music and poetry.
