A Visit to the Hometown of Chairman Mao

Changsha, located in Hunan Province, China, has a population of approximately 11 million as of 2026. It is considered one of China’s important metropolitan cities and a significant center of economic and industrial development. Its growing population, modern infrastructure, and economic progress have strengthened its position in central China. The city’s population was reportedly around .8M in 1987. This indicates remarkable population growth over the past 39 years, although historical and current estimates may vary according to geographical boundaries.

Changsha is also considered one of China’s attractive cities in terms of residential facilities and quality of life. It was my privilege to visit Changsha multiple times, where I became fascinated by its infrastructure development and modernization. With a reported GDP of approximately RMB 1.5 trillion, Changsha is considered an important economic and industrial hub, taking advantage of its local resources and exploring opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative. Among its many important institutions, one of the key establishments worth mentioning is the National University of Defense Technology, located in Changsha. Strategically, the city also plays an important role because of its geographical location, industrial strength, and technological development.

Its position in central China gives it considerable importance in the country’s broader development. Similarly, Changsha plays a vital role in China because of its geographical location and historical significance. Moreover, one of the major reasons for Changsha’s international recognition is its association with one of the most influential leaders in modern history, Chairman Mao Zedong, who belonged to Shaoshan, an area in Hunan Province. It was a privilege for me to visit Shaoshan for the second time, along with the opportunity to see the birthplace of Chairman Mao and learn more about the historical background of this remarkable place.

Moreover, Chairman Mao Zedong was born on 26 December 1893. From his early years, he developed qualities and ambitions that would eventually shape his political journey. During my last visit to his village, I reflected on many of the qualities associated with his leadership and historical role. Thousands of people visit his former residence every day to learn about his childhood, family background, and early experiences. The place provides visitors with an opportunity to understand the circumstances in which he grew up and the historical developments that shaped his life.

Chairman Mao became one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century and played a central role in transforming Chinese society during a period of immense political and social pressure. The historical Long March demonstrated the determination and endurance of the Chinese Communist movement. His political and strategic role during the conflict against Japanese forces that attacked China also became an important part of the country’s history. His influence was not limited to politics; it also extended to military strategy and the struggle for national unity. During the Second Sino-Japanese War and the wider Second World War, China suffered enormous human losses, with millions of people sacrificing their lives. The struggle to establish the People’s Republic of China in 1949 was a significant historical development, although it followed years of conflict, hardship, and political upheaval. The establishment of the new republic and the consolidation of national authority represented a major turning point in modern Chinese history. For me, visiting Shaoshan was not merely a historical excursion but also an opportunity to reflect on the determination, sacrifices, and struggles that shaped China’s national journey. It was an honour for me to bow three times in respect before Chairman Mao’s statue in his hometown. This personal experience strengthened my appreciation of the historical importance of the place and the role it continues to play in China’s national memory. Our relationship as nations also developed following the successful revolution and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Pakistan was among the earliest countries to recognize the new Chinese government and establish diplomatic relations with China in May 1951. Since then, Pakistan and China have continued to strengthen their relationship through diplomatic engagement, economic cooperation, educational exchanges, and people-to-people connections. We have now celebrated the 75th anniversary of Pakistan–China diplomatic relations, marking an important milestone in the history of our longstanding friendship. This relationship continues to offer opportunities for both countries to work together in technology, trade, industry, education, agriculture, and other important sectors. I hope that one day the government of Lahore will establish a sister-city relationship with Changsha so that we can learn from its development procedures, industrialization, educational system, and urbanization model.

Lahore is one of Pakistan’s major economic and cultural centres, and a partnership with Changsha

could provide valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge and experience. Such cooperation could help improve urban planning, strengthen industrial development, promote academic collaboration, and encourage stronger business connections between the two cities. It could also create opportunities for students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and professionals to learn from each other.

Why should the government of Punjab not also consider this opportunity? I would like to make an appeal to the Chief Minister of Punjab to explore the possibility of successfully developing a sister-city relationship between Lahore and Changsha, along with a sister-province or friendly-province relationship between Punjab and Hunan. Through these partnerships, we could achieve maximum benefits from exchanges in education, industry, healthcare, sports, agriculture, and mining and minerals. Universities could collaborate on research and academic development, healthcare institutions could exchange professional expertise, and businesses could explore responsible investment and industrial partnerships. Cooperation in mining and minerals could also help promote technical expertise, local value addition, and sustainable development. I firmly believe that these initiatives could strengthen the friendship between Pakistan and China while creating practical opportunities for development in Punjab. By establishing meaningful institutional relationships with Changsha and Hunan, we could learn from China’s experience and develop mutually beneficial projects. I hope the relevant governments, institutions, universities, and business organizations will consider these proposals and work towards building a stronger framework for cooperation. Such partnerships could transform our longstanding friendship into tangible benefits for our people and contribute to sustainable progress for future generations.
