Charles Spencer, the younger brother of the late Princess Diana, has announced plans to publish a new book offering a deeply personal account of his sister’s life, personality and tragic death.
Titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, the book is scheduled to be published in the United Kingdom and several other countries on September 22. It will also be translated into 12 languages, allowing readers around the world to learn more about Diana through the perspective of the person who knew her as a brother.
According to publisher Penguin Random House, this will be the first time Earl Charles Spencer has spoken so extensively and openly about his sister in a book. The memoir will explore Diana’s life, her rise to global fame and the tragic aftermath of her death in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
Spencer said he was prompted to write the book after receiving numerous requests for interviews as the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death approaches. He explained that the repeated requests encouraged him to put his memories and thoughts on paper, particularly because some opinions and assumptions about his sister have gradually come to be treated as facts despite being inaccurate.
The 62-year-old aristocrat said he wanted to speak on Diana’s behalf and ensure that she is remembered in a positive way. He hopes the book will allow readers to see a more personal side of the princess, describing her as a unique woman who combined love, charm, insecurity and an intense desire to experience life to the fullest.
Charles Spencer played a significant role in the events following Diana’s death. During her funeral at Westminster Abbey, he delivered an emotional speech in which he paid tribute to his sister and pledged to look after her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.
Three decades after Diana’s death, the relationship between her sons has become strained, while Diana’s former husband, Charles, is now King Charles III and his wife Camilla is Queen.
Spencer is still regarded as a figure close to both William and Harry. According to reports, Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle and their two children visited the Spencer family’s ancestral home, Althorp, in early July. During the visit, they also reportedly paid their respects at Diana’s grave.
Spencer said he hopes the book will resonate not only with people who remember Diana but also with younger generations who were not alive or old enough to remember the height of her fame.
Through Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Spencer intends to preserve his personal memories of Diana while offering readers a different perspective on the woman behind one of the world’s most recognisable royal figures.
