A representative for singer and actress Cher has said she “adores Michael Douglas” after the actor suggested that Glenn Close should have won the 1988 best actress Oscar instead of Cher.
Douglas made the remarks during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where he discussed Close’s performance in the 1987 thriller Fatal Attraction.
“She should have won with Fatal Attraction,” Douglas said, referring to Close, his co-star in the film.
He noted that it was Close’s fourth Oscar nomination, before pointing out that Cher had won the award that year for her role in Moonstruck.
Host Graham Norton reacted with surprise, saying, “Oh, wow.”
“I know. That’s what we all said,” Douglas replied, prompting laughter from the audience.
Cher’s representative subsequently told Entertainment Weekly: “Cher adores Michael Douglas.” The representative did not elaborate.
In Fatal Attraction, Douglas played Dan Gallagher, a married man who has an affair with Close’s character, Alex Forrest. The film was released in 1987 and earned Close an Oscar nomination for best actress.
Cher won the 1988 best actress Oscar for playing Loretta Castorini in Moonstruck, a romantic comedy about an Italian-American widow who falls in love with her fiancé’s estranged brother. The film also starred Nicolas Cage, Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis.
