A mysterious and new artificial intelligence (AI) system called OX Alpha emerged recently leaving experts around the world puzzled. The AI model appeared on August 20 and many were surprised that no one knew which company had quietly introduced the open AI model on OpenRouter.
What made the development particularly significant was that the AI model outperformed all of the world’s leading models on the benchmark rankings. It has now been revealed that the mysterious OX Alpha model was developed by Chinese company Z.ai.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the model was developed by Z.ai. The company confirmed that OX Alpha is a new version of its GLM series which it began using for defense after what it described as an attack on OpenAI agents by Hugging Face.
OX Alpha has been designed for coding, reliable agentic workflows and production workloads. According to the company, the model is particularly well suited for complex reasoning and workflows.
The emergence of the new model represents another step by China toward challenging U.S. dominance in the AI sector. Z.ai released GLM 5.3 earlier in August.
