The Punjab Safe Cities Authority has launched a new “CM Punjab QR Panic Button System” aimed at enhancing passenger safety and modernizing public transport security across the province under the Digital Punjab vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
The newly introduced system will be integrated into the Safe City digital security network and installed in buses, vans, rickshaws, taxis, and other public transport vehicles throughout Punjab. Authorities said the initiative has been developed in-house without imposing any additional financial burden.
According to officials, the QR-based panic button system offers multiple safety features, including emergency calling, video calling, live chat, location sharing, vehicle verification, and instant police response. Passengers will be able to scan a QR code at the start of their journey to access verified details about the vehicle, driver, and owner, which can also be shared with family members for added security.
In case of emergencies, users can directly contact the Safe City helpline through a call, video call, or live chat. The system will immediately transmit real-time location data and vehicle information to the control room, enabling rapid response through an advanced command and control infrastructure.
Authorities also highlighted that drivers will have access to emergency support through the same system, while QR codes will be deactivated and reissued whenever vehicle ownership changes to ensure updated records.
Senior officials stated that the initiative is designed to strengthen public confidence in transport safety, particularly for women, students, elderly passengers, and daily commuters. Law enforcement leadership emphasized that the system will serve as a vital communication bridge between citizens and police, improving response times and overall security.
With the introduction of this digital safety network, Punjab continues its push toward smart governance and technology-driven public service delivery aimed at improving urban safety standards across the province.
