The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected the Punjab government’s proposal to postpone local government elections until April 2027, directing officials to prepare the election schedule for immediate approval.
The decision was taken on Thursday at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja. The commission said it would proceed with the local government elections in Punjab in line with its constitutional and legal responsibilities.
Earlier this month, the ECP proposed holding the elections on December 14 and shared a draft schedule with the Punjab chief secretary for consultation. However, the provincial government requested a delay, citing harsh winter conditions, dense fog and smog expected in December and January. It also referred to the anticipated start of Ramazan in February.
In a letter sent to the ECP on October 14, the Punjab government proposed conducting the elections in three phases on April 4, 11 and 18, 2027. All three dates fall on Sundays.
The proposal followed discussions by a ministerial committee formed by the Punjab cabinet. The committee reviewed the possible impact of adverse weather conditions on election preparations, the deployment of staff and security personnel, and the transportation of polling materials.
The provincial government argued that holding elections in phases would improve administrative arrangements, strengthen security management and make polling stations more accessible to voters. It also maintained that postponement would help prevent weather-related difficulties for voters and election staff.
However, the ECP described the provincial government’s response as unsatisfactory. The commission said consultations held on August 20 had already resulted in an understanding that local government elections would take place between December 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.
The commission expressed concern that the Punjab government was now seeking to change the previously discussed timeframe. It decided to move forward with the electoral process rather than accept the proposed April dates.
The ECP also directed its officials to submit the draft election programme for Punjab without delay so it could be presented for approval.
Separately, the commission expressed disappointment over the provincial government’s failure to provide lists of officers for appointment as district returning officers, returning officers and assistant returning officers.
It directed the Punjab government to submit the required lists within one week to facilitate preparations for the polls.
The Punjab cabinet had approved the proposed April schedule on Wednesday after considering the recommendations of its ministerial committee. It also suggested that the allocation of districts across the three phases should be discussed with the ECP at a separate meeting.
The proposed distribution was to take administrative, geographical, logistical, security and weather-related factors into account. However, following the commission’s rejection of the delay request, the election schedule will now be determined through the ECP’s official process.
