England crush Sri Lanka by 119 runs as Harry Brook smashes stunning century

Southampton: England made a statement in the opening T20 International against Sri Lanka, storming to a massive 119-run victory at the Rose Bowl in Southampton after a breathtaking display of power hitting.

Captain Harry Brook was at the heart of England’s commanding performance, producing a spectacular unbeaten 114 off just 49 balls. The century was Brook’s second in T20 internationals and came with a combination of aggressive strokeplay and remarkable control.

England wasted little time putting Sri Lanka under pressure. Their explosive start saw them race to 90 runs during the powerplay, immediately shifting the momentum firmly in the hosts’ favour.

Brook found an ideal partner in Jos Buttler, with the pair tearing into the Sri Lankan bowling attack. Their partnership produced 128 runs from only 60 balls, leaving England in a dominant position.

Buttler played his part with an entertaining 80 off 44 deliveries, while Brook continued his assault at the other end. England eventually finished their 20 overs at 254 for four, setting Sri Lanka a daunting target of 255.

The chase quickly turned into a one-sided affair as England’s bowlers repeatedly broke through the Sri Lankan batting order. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 135 in the 19th over, falling well short of the target.

Dunith Wellalage, who scored 33, and Dasun Shanaka, with 24, offered some resistance, but neither could build a partnership capable of challenging England.

For England, Sonny Baker led the bowling effort with three wickets. Liam Dawson and Jamie Overton claimed two each, while Josh Tongue, Will Jacks and Adil Rashid picked up one wicket apiece.

The emphatic win gives England an early advantage in the series and provides Brook’s side with plenty of confidence heading into the next encounter.
