Erasmus hails Namibia’s stunning win over South Africa

WINDHOEK: Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus believes his side’s impressive victory over South Africa has shown that their previous success was no fluke, as the hosts look to build consistency against top-level opposition.

Namibia opened the T20I tri-series with an 18-run victory over South Africa at the Namibia Cricket Ground on Friday. It was their second win against their more highly ranked neighbours at the same venue, after also defeating them there last year.

After being asked to bat first, Erasmus’ team posted 163-9 in 20 overs, building their innings around a strong opening partnership between Louren Steenkamp and Jan Frylinck.

Frylinck was the leading run-scorer, producing an attacking 60 from 38 balls with six fours and two sixes. His contribution gave Namibia the platform they needed to put pressure on South Africa.

The visitors struggled during the chase and eventually finished at 145-9, despite an excellent innings from young batter Dewald Brevis.

Brevis kept South Africa in contention with a powerful 75 off 50 balls, striking five sixes and four boundaries. However, Namibia’s bowlers maintained their discipline and prevented the visitors from completing the chase.

All-rounder JJ Smit was particularly effective, claiming three wickets to earn the Player of the Match award.

Speaking after the game, Erasmus praised the collective effort and said the result was significant for Namibia’s development.

“This is very important, it shows we belong or that the last win was not a one-off. We showed we can be consistent and compete with the best,” Erasmus said.

The Namibia captain also highlighted the contributions of both batting and bowling units, saying the team had successfully executed its plans throughout the contest.

He noted that the batters made the most of the powerplay while the bowlers responded strongly to the challenge posed by Brevis.

“Everyone chipped in with their roles, makes the team tough to beat,” Erasmus said.

Despite the celebrations, the Namibia captain stressed that the tournament was far from over. The hosts still have three league matches remaining, and their ultimate target is to qualify for and win the final.

Namibia’s victory has given them an early boost in the tri-series and strengthened their belief that they can compete consistently against stronger cricketing nations.
