MANCHESTER: Erling Haaland has found himself at the centre of social media attention for something other than his goals after the Manchester City striker unveiled a dramatically different hairstyle ahead of the new Premier League season.
The Norwegian goal machine, long recognised for his distinctive long blond hair, surprised fans by cutting it extremely short and opting for a sharp buzz cut. Haaland revealed the transformation in a video posted on Instagram, captioning it: “New season, new trim.”
The change immediately sparked a wave of reactions across social media, with fans and football followers debating whether the new look was a bold fashion statement, a fresh start or perhaps Haaland’s own version of “Viking mode”.
Haaland arrived at the Etihad Stadium for Manchester City’s meeting with Bournemouth wearing a cap, keeping the new hairstyle largely hidden from view. But during the warm-up, he removed the cap and gave supporters a full look at his striking new appearance.
The reaction was instant.
Among those amused by the transformation was Swedish football legend Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who jokingly questioned whether Haaland had lost a bet. Ibrahimovic also wondered whether the shorter hairstyle would somehow make the powerful striker run even faster.
Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola also joined the fun, making a light-hearted comment about Haaland’s new appearance and joking that he was fortunate to still have hair on his head.
While the haircut became an online sensation, Haaland’s performance against Bournemouth was less spectacular.
The striker had several opportunities to make his mark but was unable to convert them into goals. His new hairstyle therefore did not appear to bring any immediate personal luck in front of goal.
Manchester City, however, got the result they wanted, securing a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth to give their campaign a positive start.
For Haaland, the match offered a reminder that footballers can generate headlines both on and off the pitch. His goals have made him one of the most feared forwards in world football, but his latest haircut demonstrated just how much attention his personality and appearance can attract as well.
The buzz cut also represents a striking departure from the look that has become closely associated with the 25-year-old striker. His flowing blond hair and imposing physical presence have contributed to his distinctive image, often drawing comparisons with a modern Viking warrior.
Whether the shorter style remains for the entire season remains to be seen. But one thing is already clear: Haaland’s new haircut has become a talking point before he has even had the chance to fill the Premier League headlines with goals.
With Manchester City looking to mount another serious title challenge, supporters will now be watching to see whether the “new season, new trim” era eventually produces a new goal-scoring streak too.
