Explosions rock southern Iran as US launches fresh strikes

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply on Sunday after explosions were reported in several cities across southern Iran, while the United States confirmed it had launched a new wave of military strikes against Iranian targets.

According to Iranian media, powerful explosions were heard in Asaluyeh and Bushehr, two strategically important locations on Iran’s southern coast. Additional blasts were reported from Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, and Sirik, raising concerns that the latest military escalation is spreading across multiple regions.

The reports came shortly after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the start of a new series of operations against Iran. The military said the action was carried out in response to an attack allegedly launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Gulf region.

According to CENTCOM, the vessel caught fire after the attack, leaving one crew member missing. The ship’s engine room reportedly sustained severe damage, preventing it from continuing its voyage. US officials described the operation as a direct response aimed at protecting international maritime security.

Meanwhile, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said it had received reports of a maritime incident approximately nine nautical miles east of Oman. While the agency did not identify those responsible, it urged vessels operating in the area to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Iranian authorities have not yet issued an official statement detailing the cause of the explosions or confirming any casualties or damage.

The latest developments mark another significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran, with growing concerns that continued military exchanges could further destabilize the Gulf region and threaten global shipping routes.
