Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced the indefinite closure of the Strait of Hormuz following an incident involving a vessel that allegedly attempted to pass through the strategic waterway via an unauthorised route.
According to Iranian state media, IRGC naval forces fired warning shots at the ship after it ignored instructions and tried to transit through what Iran described as an illegal and unapproved passage. Iranian authorities did not disclose the vessel’s identity or its destination.
The IRGC said the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until what it described as an end to US interference in the region. The statement linked the decision to escalating regional tensions and accused Washington of destabilising security in the Gulf.
Iran also warned against any military or political response to the incident. The IRGC said any attempt by its adversaries to use the episode as a pretext for action against Iran would trigger a “strong and decisive response.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it each day. Any disruption to traffic in the waterway could have far-reaching consequences for international energy markets and regional security.
