WASHINGTON : The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a “Duty to Warn” security alert to Khalistan movement leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on October 15 in view of an imminent threat to his life. Pannun is the General Counsel of Sikhs For Justice (SFJ).
According to details, the FBI warning specifically cautioned him regarding travel from the United States to Edmonton, Canada, where the Khalistan Referendum is scheduled to be held on October 18.
Pannun has previously been warned by Canadian police as well about threats to his life. According to information, he was also warned about potential threats to his residence in Ontario. Pannun holds dual citizenship of the US and Canada.
Pannun Questions Canada’s Growing Ties With India:
The security alert comes at a time when Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has raised questions over Canada’s increasing trade and security cooperation with India.
Pannun says that on one hand Canadian police is warning the organizers of the Khalistan Referendum about threats to their lives and homes, while on the other hand the Canadian government is expanding its relations with India.
He has demanded clarification from Canada whether the Government of India has stopped alleged assassination operations in Canada or whether the Canadian government has changed its policy to deal with these threats.
“Punjab’s Freedom or Death, Nothing In Between”:
Reacting to the security alert, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said, “Punjab’s freedom or death, nothing in between.”
He said it is possible that the Indian government may succeed in assassinating him and he may not live to see Khalistan come into existence, however, his resolve is that the next generation of Sikhs will live in a free Punjab.
According to Pannun, the referendum to be held in Edmonton on October 18 will add another chapter to the peaceful struggle for Punjab’s independence.
Khalistan Referendum on Oct 18 in Edmonton Announced:
Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has announced that despite continuous threats to organizers, the Khalistan Referendum will be held as per schedule on October 18 in Edmonton.
It is a non-binding public plebiscite, in which participating Sikh voters can express their opinion in favour or against Punjab’s independence from India and the creation of Khalistan.
According to the organization, the purpose of the referendum is to provide the Sikh people an opportunity to express their opinion about their political future and right to self-determination. However, the results of this referendum will not legally decide Punjab’s separation from India.
