Summary
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents have searched a luxury mansion in Beverly Hills as part of an expanding criminal investigation involving former California Congressman Eric Swalwell, according to reports published on Tuesday.
- The latest search is part of a broader federal investigation into Swalwell.
- The FBI’s Los Angeles field office confirmed that the Beverly Hills search was connected to an ongoing criminal investigation.
The search warrant was executed on Tuesday morning at a property on North Roxbury Drive owned by billionaire Stephen Cloobeck a Democratic Party donor who previously considered running for California governor.
FBI spokeswoman Lourdes Arocho confirmed that agents were carrying out a search warrant but provided limited details because court documents remain sealed. Authorities have not announced any arrests connected to the search, according to the report.
Swalwell, a Democrat from Dublin, California withdrew from the state’s gubernatorial race and resigned from Congress in April after allegations emerged that he had sexually assaulted a former employee and behaved inappropriately towards other young women. He has denied the allegations.
Cloobeck reportedly donated more than $1 million to Swalwell’s gubernatorial campaign after the former congressman announced his candidacy. Reports also indicated that Swalwell had been staying at Cloobeck’s Beverly Hills mansion and using the property for political meetings before the billionaire asked him to leave following the allegations.
The latest search is part of a broader federal investigation into Swalwell. In August federal agents reportedly seized his electronic devices and searched his Washington residence. He was also briefly detained at San Francisco International Airport.
According to court documents cited in reports, investigators are examining whether Swalwell violated federal civil rights law through conduct allegedly carried out under the authority of his government position. Separate investigations are also reportedly underway in New York and Los Angeles County.
Cloobeck, 64, built his fortune in the timeshare industry. He sold his Las Vegas-based Diamond Resorts company for $2.2 billion. In May he was arrested on allegations that he attempted to obstruct a victim or witness.
The FBI’s Los Angeles field office confirmed that the Beverly Hills search was connected to an ongoing criminal investigation. However the Justice Department declined to provide further information, and the affidavit supporting the search warrant remains sealed.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed the full scope of the evidence sought during the operation. The investigation remains ongoing and the allegations against the individuals involved have not all been established in court.
