Ferran Torres’ debut brace rescues PSG from Rennes defeat

PARIS: Ferran Torres made an immediate impact on his Paris Saint-Germain debut, scoring twice after coming off the bench to rescue the French champions from defeat in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Rennes.

PSG, beginning their defence of the Ligue 1 title, looked set for a disappointing opening after Rennes built a two-goal lead at Roazhon Park. But Torres, the Spain World Cup winner, changed the game after being introduced at half-time.

The forward’s first league appearance for PSG came only weeks after he scored the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final, adding another memorable chapter to what has been a remarkable period in his career.

Rennes took control in the 21st minute when Sebastian Szymanski fired a low shot into the net from outside the box. Adrien Thomasson created the opening, while Esteban Lepaul played an important role in the build-up with a precise header.

PSG tried to respond but struggled to turn their possession into clear chances. Their task became even harder seven minutes before half-time when Rennes doubled their advantage on the counter.

Moussa Al Tamari launched the move before a clever back-heel from an Egyptian winger helped set up Lepaul, who finished the attack to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.

PSG coach Luis Enrique had initially left Torres and another major summer signing, Maghnes Akliouche, on the bench. But with the champions struggling in front of goal, Torres was brought on for the second half.

The change immediately added greater urgency to PSG’s attack. Akliouche and Fabian Ruiz were also introduced as Enrique searched for a way back into the match.

The comeback began with 30 minutes remaining.

Torres received a pass from Ruiz before calmly finishing through Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba’s legs to reduce the deficit. The goal transformed the atmosphere and gave PSG renewed belief.

With eight minutes remaining, Torres completed his remarkable debut. Ruiz again provided the assist, delivering a cross that Torres met with a powerful header beyond Samba.

The equaliser gave PSG momentum, and the visitors pushed forward in search of a winner. Rennes, however, held firm to secure a valuable point against the reigning champions.

Torres said the match had been difficult but praised Ruiz for his quality and delivery.

“I just put my hand up, then with Fabian’s quality, you just have to run, and he puts the ball in the right place,” Torres said.

The result will leave PSG reflecting on missed opportunities, but Torres’ two-goal debut provides an encouraging sign. After falling two goals behind, the champions showed character to fight back — and their new forward emerged as the hero of the night.
