“Life moves pretty fast sometimes. You don’t stop and look around once in a while; you could miss it.”
Ferris Bueller has been directed by John Hughes, the man who was behind Home Alone, Denis the Menace, and Baby’s Day Out.
The dialogue above is central to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Ferris (Matthew Broderick) skips school with a series of antics, much like Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) in Home Alone outwits the burglars.
The film can also be compared to Matilda by Roald Dahl. The school principal, Ed Rooney (Jeffery Jones) in Ferris, is very similar to the character of Mrs Trunchbull in Matilda.
Both Ed Rooney and Mrs. Trunchbull are portrayed as malicious authority figures who actively look for opportunities to sabotage Ferris and Matilda’s efforts to enjoy their freedom.
The film sends the audience into peals of laughter. In a moment of compassion and kindness, Jeanie, Ferris’s sister, who apparently hates Ferris, comes to his rescue.
The film is an interesting and comical watch. Toward the end, when the Principal is about to catch Ferris red-handed for faking illness, it is Jeanie who becomes his saviour.
How Ferris’s parents are so naive is hard to comprehend. It is beyond belief. The scene where Ferris pretends to be sick is commendable. It makes the audience want to clap for Ferris’s flawless and convincing acting skills.
Cameron Frye (Alan Ruck) and Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) are Ferris’s partners in crime. As the 3 unite to spend a fulfilling day in Chicago, the audience is left in awe of their genuine acting skills.
How Ferris runs all the way home, jumping over fences, trees and walls leads the viewer aghast. The stunts he performs are remarkable.
The funny thing is how Ferris’s parents never find out about the lie their son has concocted.
How can someone be so ignorant and innocent?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is a 1986 film with a runtime of 1 hour and 43 minutes. It falls into the genre of comedy and satire. It has been rated at 7.8/10 on IMDB.
The film is like a roller coaster ride. It is fast-paced. Everything happens in a moment. Ferris is on the run all the time.
Overall, the film is a treat to watch. Funny, sarcastic and sometimes emotional, the film comes packed with entertainment and excitement.
In appreciation of the film:
“It is praised for its energetic pace, contagious charm, and heartfelt message about seizing the day before adulthood takes over.”
However, critics are of the view that the film has an unrealistic plot . The film glorifies lying, cheating, and defying authority without consequences.
Despite the negative criticism, the film was received with warmth, love and energy that was unsurpassable. It has received mixed reviews, but on the whole, the film was fantastic! I loved it. Hats off to the director John Hughes for coming up with such an incredible film, exciting and fun!
