Veteran Pakistani actor Firdous Jamal has once again found himself at the centre of controversy, this time for his candid and unflattering assessment of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, whom he described as a far bigger star than he is an actual actor.
Jamal made the remarks during an appearance on Mohsin Abbas Haider’s show, where the conversation turned to the longstanding comparison between Shah Rukh Khan and the late Dilip Kumar. Dilip Sahab, widely regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema, had himself once called Shah Rukh Khan his successor, and the two families share a close personal bond that has been publicly acknowledged on multiple occasions, including by Dilip Kumar’s wife Saira Banu.
Jamal, who has been a vocal admirer of Dilip Kumar throughout his career, took issue with the comparison directly. He said that Shah Rukh Khan is simply not a good actor, and that drawing a parallel between him and Dilip Kumar does not make sense. He went further, criticising Khan’s pronunciation and diction as being below the standard he associates with great acting, and also taking aim at his physique, which he said does not meet the expectations one would have of a leading actor in the classical sense.
His central argument, however, was a distinction between stardom and craft. “SRK is a far bigger star than he is an actor,” Jamal said, framing the remark as a candid observation rather than a personal attack, though the line between the two is difficult to maintain when the subject is one of the most beloved public figures in the history of Indian cinema.
The remarks are consistent with a pattern that has come to define Jamal’s public persona in recent years. Once celebrated as one of Pakistan’s finest stage and screen actors, he has become increasingly associated with blunt and often controversial public statements about fellow artists, many of whom are considerably younger than him or have very different professional profiles. Shah Rukh Khan’s fans, a famously passionate and protective group, are unlikely to let the remarks pass without response. Khan himself has not commented, and given his track record of handling criticism with grace and humour, it would be surprising if he chose to engage directly.
