The intelligence alliance known as Five Eyes has warned that advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models could pose serious threats to governments and critical infrastructure.
Experts have long cautioned that AI could become disruptive across many sectors in the future. Now, the Five Eyes intelligence alliance comprising United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand has described advanced AI models as a potential threat to governments and essential infrastructure.
According to a report by Al Jazeera Media Network, the alliance has issued an unusually strong joint warning. The Five Eyes report states that the risk of AI-powered cyberattacks is no longer years away but may materialize within months.
Advanced AI models could dramatically increase the scale and effectiveness of cyberattacks against governments and critical infrastructure. The alliance further warned that frontier AI models are likely to transform cyber offensive capabilities beyond industry expectations.
One of the world’s most influential intelligence partnerships urged governments and businesses to strengthen their defenses saying that AI will significantly accelerate the speed, scale and complexity of cyberattacks. Government agencies, organizations and companies should begin preparing now for future hacking threats.
The warning also reflects concerns arising from advanced AI systems including models developed by Anthropic and OpenAI. Due to growing cyber risks, a U.S. agency has reportedly reduced the deadline for securing government networks to just three days.
The report concludes that Western governments are concerned that rapidly advancing AI systems could fundamentally reshape the cybersecurity landscape creating both new opportunities and unprecedented security challenges.
