A deeply disturbing case has emerged from Lahore, one that should shake the conscience of every citizen. A criminal case has been registered against five suspects, over the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of two foreign women. The case was filed at Defence C Police Station after two women, citizens of the Netherlands and Venezuela, came forward with their complaints. According to the FIR, the suspects first met the women in Singapore in October last year and invited them to Pakistan, even arranging their visas. What followed after their arrival on June 29 this year, according to their statements, was nothing short of a nightmare. The women allege they were abducted, repeatedly assaulted, and held for ransom by the very man who had invited them as guests.
Even more chilling are the claims that the suspects threatened to torture and kill the women, and even threatened to sell their organs if money was not paid. Such threats, if proven true, reveal a level of cruelty that has no place in any society claiming to value human dignity. This case is a test for Pakistan. It is a test of whether the law applies equally to everyone, regardless of family connections or influence. The fact that the main accused is reportedly related to a senior government figure must not become a shield. If anything, it places a greater responsibility on the state to act swiftly, transparently, and without fear or favour. We strongly condemn this incident and stand with the victims in demanding justice. The police must ensure all five named suspects are arrested without delay and the investigation is carried out fairly, following every lead. If the allegations are proven in a court of law, the culprits deserve the harshest punishment available under the law. Pakistan’s image and its safety as a destination for visitors depend on how seriously such cases are treated. Justice delayed here would be justice denied, not just to two women, but to the trust the world places in us.
