Former child actress sues Disney over alleged sexual assault

Former child actress Raquel Lee Bolleau has filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company, alleging that she was sexually assaulted by a former Disney employee while working on a Disney Channel movie in 2001. Bolleau was 14 years old at the time of the alleged incidents.

Bolleau filed the civil lawsuit in Los Angeles on Friday, accusing Disney of failing to protect her while she was a minor working on the production. According to the complaint, the alleged abuse took place while the movie was being filmed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and continued during her return trip to California.

The lawsuit claims that Disney staff encouraged Bolleau to spend time with the employee involved in the allegations. She also claims that she was frequently separated from her guardian during the production, leaving her without adequate adult supervision.

Bolleau alleges that the circumstances created an environment in which she was vulnerable and that the adults responsible for overseeing the production failed to take appropriate steps to protect her. She claims that the alleged misconduct had a serious impact on her emotional wellbeing and behaviour during the filming process.

According to the lawsuit, people working on the production noticed noticeable changes in Bolleau while she was filming. Her attorneys claim that adults around her observed changes in her behaviour and overall wellbeing, but no one properly intervened, investigated the situation or took meaningful action to determine what was happening.

Instead, Bolleau alleges that Disney representatives placed responsibility on her for changes in her performance. She claims that rather than investigating the circumstances surrounding her behaviour, the company treated her as a problem and ultimately canceled a future role that she had expected to receive.

The lawsuit argues that the alleged failures had consequences that extended beyond the production itself. Bolleau is seeking damages for emotional distress and financial losses, as well as additional legal expenses connected to the case.

Her legal team has also spoken about the broader issue of protecting minors who work in the entertainment industry. In a statement, her attorneys called for greater accountability and emphasized the responsibility of studios and production teams to safeguard young performers working on film and television projects.

The allegations come more than two decades after Bolleau worked on the Disney Channel movie. The lawsuit now places renewed attention on the protections available to child actors and the responsibilities of adults and entertainment companies when minors are involved in productions.

Despite the difficult experience described in the complaint, Bolleau continued her career in the entertainment industry. Following her appearance in the Disney Channel movie, she went on to become the voice of a recurring character in a Disney Channel animated series, a role she performed for several years.

She later returned to the character for a more recent streaming revival of the series, reconnecting her with a role from an earlier stage of her career.

The lawsuit remains an allegation, and the claims made by Bolleau have yet to be established in court. The case is expected to draw further attention to questions surrounding workplace safety, supervision and accountability for young performers in the entertainment industry.
