Former Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of 18 child sexual abuse offencive , including rape, involving two victims who were children at the time.
The sentence was handed down at Newry Crown Court, Northern Ireland, on October 15, 2026, nearly four months after a jury found Donaldson guilty of the offences. The crimes took place between 1985 and 2008.
Judge Paul Ramsey imposed an 11-year prison term for offences involving one victim and a further four years for offences involving the second victim. The sentences will run consecutively, bringing the total prison term to 15 years.
The 63-year-old former politician was convicted of one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 counts of indecent assault. He denied all 18 charges during the trial.
During the sentencing hearing, the judge described Donaldson’s downfall as a “catastrophic descent into disgrace.” The court also considered the prolonged nature of the offences, the young ages of the victims and the significant age difference between them and the defendant.
Victim impact statements presented to the court highlighted the lasting effects of the abuse. One victim described growing up with feelings of shame, anger and low self-worth, while the other spoke about the continuing emotional impact of the offences and the trial.
Donaldson remained expressionless as the sentence was announced and was returned to custody to begin serving his prison term.
The DUP, which Donaldson led from 2021 until his resignation in March 2024 following his arrest, welcomed the sentence. The party said justice had been served and stressed that individuals must be held accountable regardless of their position or status.
Donaldson was one of Northern Ireland’s prominent political figures, having served as a Member of Parliament and played a role in negotiations over post-Brexit trading arrangements. He was stripped of his knighthood in July 2026 following his conviction.
The case has drawn significant public attention because of Donaldson’s long political career and the serious nature of the offences. The identities of the victims remain protected by law.
