Hollywood actors often go far beyond ordinary preparation to fully immerse themselves in demanding roles. From significant weight changes and elaborate prosthetics to lengthy makeup sessions and physical training, many stars have transformed their appearances to convincingly portray characters on screen.
Tom Cruise is the latest major Hollywood name to undergo an extraordinary makeover, transforming himself for his upcoming film Digger. The actor plays oil tycoon Digger Rockwell, appearing with thinning white hair, a prosthetic stomach and a noticeably different overall look. He also adopts a thick Southern accent for the character.
Cruise revealed that his initial transformation required around six hours. However, the actor and makeup team worked to make the process more efficient. By timing every stage and repeatedly rehearsing the routine, they managed to reduce the amount of time required. Cooling machines were also used to help Cruise remain comfortable while wearing the prosthetics.
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Digger follows an oil tycoon who is given a major task by the US president, played by John Goodman, after triggering a worldwide ecological crisis. Cruise filmed the project during a six-month production period in the United Kingdom.
Jacob Elordi has also experienced an extensive transformation for his role in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. The Euphoria star portrays the Creature and reportedly spent as many as 11 hours a day in the makeup chair.
Creating the character required 42 separate prosthetic components, along with artificial dentures, a specially designed wig and extensive body makeup. Elordi also changed his voice for the role, adopting a Yorkshire accent inspired by a blind man encountered by his character in the film.
Christian Bale is another actor widely known for making dramatic physical changes for his performances. For the 2005 psychological thriller The Machinist, Bale portrayed Trevor Reznik, an extremely thin industrial worker suffering from severe insomnia.
The actor lost approximately 62 pounds for the role, reducing his weight from around 182 pounds to 120 pounds in just four months. His preparation reportedly involved a highly restrictive diet while he continued exercising. The extreme physical change became one of the most memorable aspects of his performance.
Sydney Sweeney also underwent a major transformation for Christy, in which she portrays legendary boxer Christy Martin. Sweeney gained approximately 30 pounds and trained three times a day for three months to prepare for the demanding role.
Her preparation included intensive boxing sessions, strength training and a high-calorie diet. Her reported food routine included items such as fast food, milkshakes and protein shakes to support the physical demands of the transformation.
Sebastian Stan, meanwhile, experienced a different kind of challenge while working on A Different Man. The actor wore extensive full-face prosthetics for his character, a process that significantly changed his appearance. Stan previously described the experience as leaving him feeling isolated and scared during filming.
These transformations demonstrate the lengths Hollywood performers can go to in order to make fictional characters appear authentic and believable. Whether through weight changes, prosthetic makeup, accents or intensive physical training, each actor uses a different approach to disappear into the role.
