George Clooney has come under scrutiny after a Libyan businessman accused a human rights organisation he co-founded of publishing false allegations against him. The legal dispute has also raised questions about the actor’s criticism of irresponsible journalism and the importance of verifying information before making serious claims.
Libyan steel magnate Ahmed Gadalla has filed a defamation lawsuit against The Sentry, a human rights organisation that investigates corruption and financial networks linked to conflict. The organisation published a 25-page report accusing Gadalla of money laundering, arms smuggling and providing financial support to Russian mercenaries.
Gadalla has strongly rejected the allegations, describing the report’s central claims as false. He argues that the organisation failed to verify its information properly and did not give him a fair opportunity to respond before publishing the findings.
The businessman has also questioned the credibility of The Sentry, arguing that its reporting standards fall below those expected of a tabloid newspaper. According to court documents, he believes the organisation failed to establish the facts and refused to publish his response to the accusations.
Clooney’s past criticism draws attention
The dispute has brought renewed attention to Clooney’s previous comments about journalistic responsibility and media accuracy.
The Hollywood actor has repeatedly criticised British tabloids for publishing stories he considers inaccurate and intrusive, particularly when reports involve his family. He has also spoken out against media outlets that publish information without properly checking the facts.
In 2014, Clooney accused the Daily Mail of publishing a completely fabricated story about the mother of his then-fiancée, Amal Alamuddin, now known as Amal Clooney.
His criticism of the publication reflected his concerns about the potential harm caused by inaccurate reporting, especially when stories involve private family matters.
However, Gadalla’s legal challenge has created an uncomfortable situation for the actor because of his connection to The Sentry. The businessman is effectively questioning the reporting standards of an organisation associated with someone who has publicly demanded greater accuracy and accountability from the media.
The case does not establish that Clooney personally prepared, approved or published the disputed allegations. Nevertheless, the organisation’s role in the controversy has drawn attention to the actor’s involvement and his public stance on responsible journalism.
What The Sentry’s report alleges
The Sentry was co-founded by Clooney and human rights investigator John Prendergast. The organisation examines financial activities that may contribute to corruption, armed conflict and human rights abuses.
Its investigation into Gadalla was published in April and presented him as a key financial figure connected to Libya’s Haftar family.
The report alleged that Gadalla exercised control over banks, helped facilitate arms smuggling in violation of a United Nations arms embargo and played a role in financial arrangements linked to military operations.
It also claimed that approximately $300 million in loans were used to help finance an unsuccessful offensive against Tripoli in 2019 and 2020.
Following its investigation, The Sentry called for sanctions against Gadalla.
The businessman, who also chairs a state-owned steel company and is known by the name Ahmed Alushibe, has firmly denied the accusations. He has said that he completely rejects the claims and that his legal representatives are challenging them.
Importantly, the allegations contained in the report have not been tested in court. Their publication does not, by itself, establish that the alleged activities occurred.
Clooney’s financial connection to the organisation
Clooney’s involvement with The Sentry extends beyond its founding. He and actor Don Cheadle serve on its two-member advisory board.
Clooney has also reportedly donated $1 million to the organisation through the Clooney Foundation for Justice, further highlighting his connection to its work.
However, his association with The Sentry does not establish that he was directly involved in the investigation or its conclusions.
As the defamation case develops, the central questions will concern the accuracy of the report, the evidence supporting its allegations and whether the organisation met its legal obligations when publishing the findings.
Clooney has not publicly responded to the hypocrisy accusation.
For now, the dispute remains a legal challenge involving serious allegations and firm denials. The outcome could determine whether the contested reporting withstands legal scrutiny, while also renewing the wider debate over journalistic standards, accountability and the responsibility to verify claims before publishing them.
