Michael Douglas has revealed that he wanted Marvel to kill off his character after the second Ant-Man film, but the studio refused to let him leave the franchise.
The Oscar-winning actor, who plays scientist Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), recently discussed his experience with the superhero franchise. Douglas explained that he had hoped his character would be written out of the story earlier, but Marvel had other plans for him.
During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Douglas was asked whether he had wanted to leave the Marvel franchise. The actor confirmed that he had considered an exit and even hoped his character would die in one of the earlier films.
“I would have been killed off after the second one, but they wouldn’t let me,” Douglas said.
His comments have offered a fresh insight into his experience working on the popular superhero movies. Although the films brought him into one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises, Douglas admitted that the experience was not quite what he had expected when he first agreed to join the cast.
Douglas made his Marvel debut in 2015 with Ant-Man. He played Hank Pym, a brilliant scientist who developed technology that allows people to shrink to a much smaller size while retaining their strength.
In the film, Pym becomes a mentor to Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, and helps him take on the role of Ant-Man. His character also has an important connection to Hope van Dyne, played by Evangeline Lilly, who later becomes the superhero known as the Wasp.
Following the success of the first film, Douglas returned for Ant-Man and the Wasp in 2018. He also appeared in the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame in 2019 before reprising his role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023.
Despite his continued involvement in the franchise, Douglas explained that his original decision to join Marvel was largely driven by curiosity.
The actor revealed that he had never worked on a green-screen movie before accepting the role. He wanted to experience the filmmaking process and understand how actors perform in scenes that rely heavily on computer-generated effects.
However, he soon discovered that working on a superhero film presented challenges he had not anticipated.
“It’s hard acting, man,” he said while discussing the experience.
Douglas spoke positively about his co-star Paul Rudd, describing him as a wonderful actor. He also praised the rest of the cast, saying they were a lovely group of people to work with.
Nevertheless, the actor suggested that once he became part of the Marvel franchise, leaving was not as simple as he had imagined.
He also joked that he should have paid closer attention to the details of his contract before signing on for the films.
Douglas has previously spoken about his desire to see Hank Pym killed off. During an appearance on The View in 2024, he revealed that he had specifically requested his character’s death for the third Ant-Man movie.
The actor even suggested an unusual way to bring the character’s story to an end. His idea involved Hank Pym shrinking to the size of an ant before exploding, providing a dramatic and memorable conclusion to his time in the franchise.
However, the filmmakers ultimately chose to keep the character alive, allowing Douglas to return for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
The actor has also expressed uncertainty about returning to Marvel in the future. In an interview with Deadline last year, Douglas indicated that he did not expect to appear in any additional Marvel films.
He explained that he remained open to acting opportunities if an interesting project came along, but he did not appear eager to continue playing Hank Pym indefinitely.
While Douglas has enjoyed working alongside talented actors, his latest comments suggest that his experience with the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been more complicated than fans might expect.
For now, the actor appears ready to explore other opportunities rather than commit to another superhero adventure.
