MUZAFFARABAD: A security guard was killed and several others were injured after unidentified attackers reportedly opened fire on the convoy of former Azad Jammu and Kashmir prime minister Tanveer Ilyas, according to police officials.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Azad Kashmir Police Raja Akmal confirmed that authorities had received information about the firing incident and that an investigation had been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

The DIG said initial information was provided by a spokesperson for Tanveer Ilyas, who informed police that one member of the former prime minister’s security team had lost his life in the attack. He added that several other people accompanying the convoy were also injured and had been shifted for medical treatment.

Police officials said the exact number of injured persons and the nature of their injuries are yet to be officially confirmed. Authorities are collecting evidence from the scene and recording statements to establish how the incident occurred and identify those responsible.

Raja Akmal said law enforcement agencies had begun a detailed investigation and were examining all aspects of the case. He added that police were working to determine the motive behind the attack and whether it had been planned in advance.

The DIG stressed that strict action would be taken against those involved in the firing. He said the government would not tolerate any attempt to disturb law and order and warned that anyone found responsible would face legal consequences.
