NEW YORK: Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries has secured a decisive victory in New York’s Eighth Congressional District, strengthening his position as a potential contender for the powerful post of Speaker of the US House of Representatives if Democrats regain control of Congress.
According to preliminary figures compiled by a US news agency, Jeffries secured 79.2 per cent of the vote, comfortably defeating his Republican challenger, Lewis Mizrahi.
His victory comes amid a strong electoral performance by Democrats in the 2026 US midterm elections, with the party making significant gains across several states and moving closer to reclaiming control of the House of Representatives.
If Democrats secure a majority and their lawmakers select Jeffries for the speakership, he would make history as the first Black Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The prospect of Jeffries taking the position has added further significance to his re-election, particularly as Democrats look to challenge Republican influence in Washington and present a renewed political direction to American voters.
Addressing supporters after his victory, Jeffries declared, “America is Back,” saying voters had delivered their verdict against extremism and corruption.
He described the election outcome as a mandate for change, arguing that Americans were frustrated with the way several important issues were being handled under the current political leadership.
Jeffries said Democrats would have a responsibility to deliver meaningful improvements in people’s lives if they regained control of the House.
He identified the rising cost of housing, groceries and gasoline as major concerns facing American households, promising that Democrats would work to reduce the financial pressure on ordinary families.
Healthcare affordability was another key priority highlighted in his victory speech. Jeffries said his party would work to ensure that Americans could access medical treatment whenever they needed it, regardless of their financial circumstances.
He also sought to present the election result as a victory extending beyond party politics, emphasising that the outcome belonged to the American people.
“This is not just a victory for Democrats, but for all Americans,” was the central message of his remarks as he called for national unity and a renewed commitment to public service.
Jeffries’ victory reflects his continued political strength in New York and places him at the centre of the Democrats’ broader congressional ambitions.
As vote counting continues across the country, the final balance of power in the House will determine whether he gets the opportunity to make American political history.
For now, his commanding re-election victory has strengthened expectations that Jeffries could emerge as one of the most influential figures in Washington’s next political chapter.
