NEW DELHI: India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a senior government accounts official for allegedly accepting a Rs1 million bribe through his wife in connection with the renewal of a private company’s contract.
According to Indian media reports, the accused, identified as Sandeep, is a 2020-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service officer serving as Deputy Controller of Accounts and an internal financial adviser at the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Investigators allege that the official initially demanded Rs1.5 million from a businessman to facilitate the processing of a pending contract renewal. Following negotiations, the amount was reportedly reduced to Rs1 million, with the alleged payment intended to speed up the renewal process.
The CBI reportedly set a trap on Tuesday and arrested the official after the bribe was allegedly handed over through his wife. The agency has launched further proceedings and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged corruption case.
