Iran condemns new US sanctions as ‘economic terrorism’

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has strongly condemned the latest US sanctions against Tehran. He has described the measures as “state and economic terrorism.”

Araghchi has raised the issue with the United Nations. He sent a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the Security Council and member states.

In the letter, Araghchi accused Washington of increasing economic pressure on Iran after failing to achieve its objectives through the ongoing conflict. He also alleged that the United States had failed to persuade other countries to join its campaign against Tehran.

The Iranian foreign minister said Washington was now trying to weaken Iran by disrupting its economic relations with other countries. He warned that pressure on Iran’s trade and financial links could affect ordinary citizens.

Araghchi also criticised the impact of sanctions on essential goods. He said restrictions could limit Iranian citizens’ access to food, medicines, medical equipment, energy and other basic necessities.

According to Iran, such measures deliberately place additional pressure on civilians. Tehran has therefore urged the international community to reject what it calls unilateral US economic measures.

Araghchi called on the UN Security Council and its member states to condemn the sanctions. He also urged countries not to recognise or enforce US restrictions against Iran.

The Iranian foreign minister further demanded that Washington stop pressuring third countries to comply with its sanctions. Tehran says countries should be free to maintain legitimate economic and trade relations with Iran.

The latest dispute comes as tensions between Iran and the United States remain high. Washington has announced increasingly severe economic measures against Tehran, while Iranian officials have repeatedly dismissed the sanctions as ineffective and harmful to civilians.
