TEHRAN: Iran has executed a foreign national over charges linked to anti-government protests that took place in the country earlier this year, Iranian state media reported on Thursday.
Iranian judicial authorities identified the executed man as Qaem Hosseini, saying he was convicted over an alleged attack on Iranian security forces during protests in the central city of Isfahan.
According to Iranian media reports, four security personnel were killed during an attack by protesters in Isfahan amid the unrest in January. Authorities subsequently launched investigations and brought charges against several people accused of involvement in the violence.
However, Iranian authorities did not disclose Hosseini’s nationality or provide further details about his background.
Hosseini was reportedly among those prosecuted in connection with demonstrations held at Ali Khani Square in Isfahan in January. The protests were part of wider anti-government unrest that prompted a strong security response from Iranian authorities.
Iranian media said Hosseini was convicted of several serious offences, including allegedly drawing a weapon, creating fear and insecurity, threatening national security and causing severe disruption to public order.
The execution is likely to attract further international attention because of the uncertainty surrounding Hosseini’s nationality and the circumstances of his conviction.
Iran has previously executed people convicted of crimes related to protests and national security cases, drawing criticism from international rights organisations. Iranian authorities, however, maintain that executions are carried out following judicial proceedings and that individuals convicted of serious offences must face legal consequences.
The latest execution comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and Western countries. Tehran is currently facing intense political and economic pressure, while the country remains embroiled in a broader conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Iranian officials have repeatedly accused foreign powers of supporting unrest and attempting to destabilise the country. Western governments and rights groups have meanwhile raised concerns about the treatment of protesters, detainees and defendants in Iranian courts.
The case also comes shortly after Iranian authorities reported the execution of two people convicted of spying for Israel, adding to a series of highly sensitive national security cases.
The latest execution underscores the continuing severity of Iran’s response to protest-related offences and national security allegations, while questions remain over the identity of the executed foreign national and the evidence presented against him.
