It: Welcome to Derry surprises fans with Halloween episode

Fans of It: Welcome to Derry received an unexpected Halloween surprise as HBO Max released a special episode of the supernatural horror series, offering viewers a deeper look into the terrifying origins of the mysterious entity that haunts Derry.

The surprise episode, titled A Story of Derry, runs for approximately 30 minutes and takes viewers back centuries before the events portrayed in the series. Set long before the arrival of Pennywise, the special explores the history of the sinister force that has become central to the It universe.

The unexpected release arrived on October 31, giving horror enthusiasts an additional reason to celebrate Halloween. The streaming platform announced the special through its official Instagram account, describing the release as a surprise Halloween treat for fans.

The announcement encouraged viewers to watch the previously unseen special, which explores the origins of the terrifying presence in Derry. The episode became an exciting addition to the franchise, particularly for audiences interested in learning more about the dark history behind the supernatural horror story.

The timing of the release was especially appropriate, considering the series’ frightening atmosphere and its connection to one of Stephen King’s most recognisable horror creations. Halloween has long been associated with horror entertainment, making the surprise episode a fitting gift for viewers looking for something chilling to watch during the holiday.

The release also comes as the series continues to build momentum following its successful introduction to audiences. HBO renewed It: Welcome to Derry for a second season in August, signalling the network’s continued interest in expanding the terrifying world established by the show.

The series originally premiered on HBO Max on October 26, 2025, introducing viewers to a new chapter in the disturbing history of Derry. Although the town appears ordinary on the surface, its dark past and connection to an ancient evil form the foundation of the story.

Inspired by Stephen King’s bestselling novel It, the series expands the mythology explored in the two-part film adaptation released in 2017 and 2019. Rather than retelling the events of the movies, the television series serves as a prequel, examining the history of the town and the horrors that existed before the familiar story unfolded.

Pennywise, the terrifying entity associated with the franchise, remains one of the most recognisable figures in modern horror. The character’s frightening appearance and disturbing behaviour have helped establish It as a major name in supernatural entertainment.

By exploring events that took place centuries earlier, A Story of Derry offers fans an opportunity to discover additional details about the mysterious evil connected to the town. The special also adds another layer to the franchise’s mythology, giving dedicated viewers more material to explore while they await the series’ next chapter.

The surprise announcement quickly attracted enthusiastic reactions from fans, many of whom welcomed the unexpected release as a thoughtful Halloween gift.

One viewer expressed gratitude for the special, writing, “Thank you for this gift to all the fans of the IT universe.”

Another fan shared an equally enthusiastic response, describing the instalment as the best episode so far.

A third viewer thanked HBO Max for the surprise, expressing excitement about receiving what they considered a perfect Halloween present.

The positive reactions highlighted the audience’s continued interest in the franchise and its expanding supernatural storyline.

With its unexpected Halloween release, A Story of Derry has given fans another reason to revisit the frightening world of It: Welcome to Derry. As anticipation builds for the show’s second season, the special offers viewers an additional glimpse into the dark history of Derry and the mysterious evil that continues to define its terrifying legacy.
