LONDON: Aston Villa have completed the signing of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with the move potentially opening the door for World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez to leave the Premier League club.
Villa confirmed the arrival of Suzuki on Wednesday after agreeing a permanent transfer reportedly worth around €35 million ($40m). The 23-year-old goalkeeper arrives with growing international experience and a reputation as one of Japan’s most promising players.

Suzuki, who was born in the United States, began his professional career with Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds. He made his senior debut for the club at just 18 and quickly attracted attention with his athleticism and composure between the posts.
After moving to Europe, Suzuki spent a brief period with Belgian club Sint-Truiden before joining Italian side Parma. He made 59 appearances across two seasons and helped the club finish 13th in Serie A last season.
His move to Villa represents another major step in his rapidly developing career. Suzuki will also make history as the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League, adding another milestone to the growing presence of Japanese footballers in England’s top flight.
The transfer could have significant consequences for Martinez, whose future at Villa remains uncertain.

The Argentine goalkeeper has been a key figure for the club since arriving in England and became a global star after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also featured in this year’s World Cup final and played an important role in Villa’s Europa League triumph in May.
Martinez has attracted interest from Italian clubs, with Juventus previously emerging as a possible destination. However, a proposed move collapsed after Villa and the Italian giants failed to agree on a transfer fee.
With Suzuki now arriving in Birmingham on a long-term deal, competition for the No. 1 position is likely to intensify.
For Villa, the signing represents an investment in a young goalkeeper with international pedigree and considerable room for development. For Suzuki, meanwhile, the Premier League move offers the biggest challenge of his career—and a chance to make history in England.
