US actress Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that she gave herself a pixie haircut as a protest after the production team behind The Hunger Games refused her request to wear a wig instead of repeatedly dyeing her hair.
Lawrence, who played brunette heroine Katniss Everdeen in the four-film franchise, discussed the decision on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
“I had no agency over my hair,” she said, explaining that she had grown tired of repeatedly dyeing her naturally blonde hair brown for the role.
The actress said the production team had resisted her request for a wig, prompting her to stage what she described as her “first tiny little protest” by giving herself what she called “the worst haircut anyone has ever seen in their life” — the pixie cut.
Lawrence cut her hair after filming the second instalment, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, released in 2013.
She has previously said that her hair was badly damaged by repeated colouring for film roles. During a camera test for X-Men: First Class, she recalled dyeing it several different colours in a single day.
In a separate interview with Allure, Lawrence said the Hunger Games production team preferred her natural hair because of the action scenes, which often involved getting wet.
“In between Hunger Games, I would either be acting in something or (going to) something like the Oscars, where I wanted to look like myself, which was blonde. And so, when I would wrap, I would then dye my hair blonde, and my hair started getting really damaged,” she said.
Looking back on the decision, Lawrence joked: “I won that battle because they had to put me in a wig, but I lost the war with having that pixie cut.”
Lawrence launched her haircare brand, mes°, on October 27, 2026, as she prepares for the release of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled to open in cinemas on November 20.
