JI threatens Rawalpindi, Islamabad sit-ins over rally permission

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has warned the government of protests in Rawalpindi and Islamabad if authorities refuse to allow the party to hold a public gathering at Liaquat Bagh.

The warning comes as the JI continues its campaign against the petroleum development levy and rising fuel prices. The party has been holding protests in provincial capitals since August 16.

The protests have now entered their 15th consecutive day. The party has also announced a nationwide shutter-down strike for September 3.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem accused the administration of deliberately delaying permission for the Liaquat Bagh gathering. He claimed that the authorities were using delaying tactics instead of allowing the party to proceed with its planned activity.

The JI chief warned that the government would be responsible for the consequences if it continued to block the rally.

He said the party would not remain silent over issues affecting the public. According to him, the JI was working to create awareness among citizens and mobilise them against rising taxes, fuel prices and electricity bills.

Hafiz Naeem also criticised the Punjab government. He alleged that corruption and poor governance were adding to the difficulties faced by ordinary citizens.

He said the party would continue its campaign until its demands were addressed. The JI has been increasing pressure on the government through street protests and political mobilisation.

The JI emir also announced that a public gathering would be held in Rawalpindi later on Sunday. He said he would meet representatives of the business community during his visit.

The party has called for greater public participation in its campaign. It says the petroleum levy and increasing fuel costs are placing an additional burden on households and businesses.

The planned September 3 shutter-down strike is expected to be another major step in the JI’s campaign against the government’s fuel and taxation policies.
