Actress Jodie Sweetin has recalled how she struggled financially after her hit sitcom “Full House” ended, saying a job at a treatment centre taught her humility and helped her find purpose beyond acting.
Sweetin, who played Stephanie Tanner in the sitcom, was a teenager when the show ended in 1995. In the years that followed, she struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and found it difficult to secure regular acting work.
After getting sober in 2011, she took a job as a logistics coordinator at a treatment centre in Los Angeles.
“I didn’t have ego about it. I didn’t care that I was, quote-unquote, working a normal job,” she said on the “We’re Still Here, Babe” podcast. “I was like, ‘Paying my bills. Kids don’t pay for themselves.'”
Sweetin said the experience taught her humility, recalling how she sometimes had to put items back while shopping at Target because she did not have enough money on her debit card.
The actress said she gradually became happy with her life and decided to make the best of her circumstances, even as she considered the possibility that she might never act again.
Her career gained fresh momentum when the “Full House” revival, “Fuller House”, premiered on Netflix in 2016.
But her financial difficulties had not immediately disappeared. Sweetin said she had to borrow money during the show’s first week of production and had only about $190 in her bank account when she received her first paycheque.
