Hollywood actor John Goodman has opened up about his struggles with food, alcohol addiction, and weight gain, revealing that he reached nearly 400 pounds after giving up drinking. The 74-year-old actor explained that although he stopped drinking alcohol in 2007, he developed an unhealthy relationship with food that affected his health and well-being.
Goodman, best known for his roles in Roseanne and The Righteous Gemstones, discussed his personal journey and the challenges he faced after becoming sober. He admitted that food became a replacement for alcohol, leading him to develop eating habits that contributed to his significant weight gain.
The actor stopped drinking at the age of 55 in 2007. However, leaving alcohol behind did not immediately solve all his problems. Instead, he found himself turning to food for the same kind of satisfaction he had previously sought through drinking.
“I was almost four hundred pounds. I was eating alcoholically after I stopped drinking,” Goodman said while reflecting on that difficult period of his life.
He also described how his weight repeatedly increased and decreased over the years. Goodman explained that he would sometimes lose around 60 pounds during the summer, only to regain the weight later. On other occasions, he lost 70 or even 80 pounds before returning to his previous weight.
The repeated cycle eventually became exhausting, motivating him to make lasting changes to his lifestyle. He realised that constantly losing and regaining weight was not a sustainable way to protect his health.
Goodman also explained how his struggle with food was connected to the way he had previously approached alcohol. He described the desire for immediate satisfaction as a major problem, explaining that people often focus on the pleasure they feel in the moment without thinking about the consequences that follow.
His experience with drinking had involved a similar pattern. Alcohol initially offered temporary enjoyment, but the effects eventually became more serious. He experienced severe hangovers and physical shaking, which sometimes led him to drink again to relieve the symptoms.
The actor recognised that this behaviour had created a damaging cycle that was difficult to escape. Understanding the connection helped him reflect on his habits and the importance of making healthier decisions.
Goodman also believes that his drinking affected his personal development. He admitted that alcohol prevented him from fully growing emotionally and understanding the impact of his actions on other people.
“I was delaying my maturation by drinking, and I had a lot of catching up to do, just realizing how selfish it made me,” he said.
He explained that his addiction had sometimes caused him to overlook important aspects of everyday life. Becoming sober gave him an opportunity to recognise those mistakes and develop a healthier perspective.
Goodman has since expressed gratitude for discovering that life could be enjoyable without relying on alcohol or other substances. He has described his decision to stop drinking as life-saving, highlighting how important sobriety became to his overall well-being.
The actor also underwent an operation on his stomach as part of his efforts to address his weight. However, he said the procedure came with complications, including anaemia and the loss of a layer of fat beneath his skin.
His weight struggles became public knowledge years ago when he revealed that he was approaching 400 pounds. He later said that he reached his highest weight in 2011.
In 2016, Goodman admitted that he had become tired of his appearance and wanted to make a serious change. With support from health coach Mackie Shilstone, he began working towards improving his fitness and maintaining a healthier lifestyle.
Over the years, Goodman is estimated to have lost approximately 200 pounds, marking a significant transformation in his life.
Despite the challenges, the actor has continued building his career in Hollywood. He has appeared in The Righteous Gemstones and Digger and remains widely recognised for playing Dan Conner in Roseanne.
Goodman’s experience highlights the complicated relationship between addiction, emotional well-being, and physical health. His journey also demonstrates that overcoming one struggle can sometimes reveal another, making long-term recovery a process that requires patience, self-awareness, and lasting lifestyle changes.
