Kangana Ranaut stands up for Trisha amid controversy

Kangana Ranaut has spoken out in support of South Indian actress Trisha Krishnan amid a growing political controversy surrounding remarks allegedly directed at the actress.

The Bollywood actress-turned-politician addressed the issue while speaking to reporters in Kullu after chairing a DISHA meeting. Although Kangana did not mention Trisha by name, her comments appeared to refer to the controversy that has unfolded in Tamil Nadu in recent weeks.

Kangana said that when personal disputes involving public figures become a matter of public discussion, women are often subjected to abuse and character attacks regardless of the circumstances surrounding the issue.

“You have seen what happened in Tamil Nadu, where a very respected artist and actress was involved in a matter where the relationship was between both parties,” Kangana said.

She went on to highlight what she described as a wider problem faced by women in public life. According to the actress, women are frequently targeted through personal attacks and attempts to damage their reputation.

Kangana pointed out that such treatment is not limited to India. She said successful and influential women around the world often face efforts to undermine their credibility by attacking their personal character.

She specifically referred to working women, actors, politicians and women holding positions of authority, saying their achievements can sometimes make them targets of character assassination.

Her remarks come amid a controversy involving Tamil Nadu political figures and comments associated with Trisha. The issue gained attention after Udhayanidhi Stalin reportedly made a remark during a DMK protest in Thanjavur concerning the Cauvery water dispute.

While addressing supporters and criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, Udhayanidhi made a statement in Tamil that was widely interpreted as having a double meaning. The comment came as people in the gathering reportedly chanted Trisha’s name, adding to speculation about the intended reference.

Udhayanidhi later clarified that his remarks were connected to the Cauvery water issue and that he was referring to the need for water to reach the region. However, the explanation did little to prevent the statement from becoming a major political controversy.

The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) subsequently criticised the remark, accusing Udhayanidhi of making an inappropriate comment about a woman in a public setting. The controversy also led to renewed discussion about the treatment of women in politics and entertainment.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay had previously warned against making double-meaning remarks about women, further intensifying the political debate surrounding the incident.

Udhayanidhi was arrested from his residence in Chennai on August 4 in connection with the case. He was subsequently granted bail as proceedings related to the matter continued.

Against this backdrop, Kangana’s comments have added another prominent voice to the discussion. Without directly naming Trisha or commenting on the legal aspects of the case, she focused on what she sees as a broader pattern in which women are made the target of personal attacks when controversies involving them become public.

The actress has frequently spoken about issues involving women, public figures and the entertainment industry. Her latest remarks similarly placed the focus on the consequences of character assassination, particularly for women who hold prominent positions.

The controversy surrounding Trisha has therefore expanded beyond the original political remarks, prompting conversations about public discourse, accountability and the way female actors and other successful women are treated when their names become part of political disputes.
