Karachi mayor vows to ease traffic woes

KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has said that the city’s infrastructure will be further improved to address growing traffic problems and provide better mobility to residents.

A meeting on major development projects in Karachi was held under the chairmanship of the mayor. Municipal Commissioner, DIG Traffic Police and other senior officials attended the meeting.

According to the spokesperson, the Director General of Technical Services (DGTS) briefed the participants on the proposed Khaliq-uz-Zaman Flyover and Garden Flyovers.

Speaking at the meeting, Murtaza Wahab said the city administration wanted to improve Karachi’s infrastructure and resolve traffic-related problems through major development projects.

He said the construction of the two flyovers would help reduce traffic congestion and improve the flow of vehicles in key areas of the city.

The mayor said representatives of various institutions were being brought on board to fast-track development work and ensure that all relevant stakeholders had an opportunity to present their views.

He directed the authorities to ensure smooth traffic arrangements during the construction of the flyovers. He particularly stressed the need to provide convenient U-turns and alternative routes for motorists so that residents do not face unnecessary difficulties during the construction phase.

Murtaza Wahab said the tender for the Garden Flyover had already been issued and expressed hope that the project would be completed within the current year.

He said the Garden Flyover would provide significant relief to residents of Garden, Saddar and surrounding areas by improving connectivity and reducing traffic pressure on existing roads.

The meeting also reviewed progress on other major infrastructure projects and discussed measures to accelerate development work across the city.

The mayor directed the concerned departments to maintain coordination and ensure that ongoing and planned projects were completed efficiently and within the stipulated timelines.

The city administration said the projects were part of broader efforts to upgrade Karachi’s infrastructure and provide residents with safer, smoother and more efficient transportation routes.
