Pakistan’s maritime sector has recorded significant improvement following reforms introduced under the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Affairs, with the country’s major ports making notable gains in international rankings.

Karachi Port has moved up from 99th to 69th position in the global ranking within a year, reflecting improvements in port operations and efficiency. Port Qasim has also advanced considerably, rising from 74th to 56th position during the same period.

The improvement is being viewed as an important development for Pakistan’s maritime economy. Better port performance can help reduce delays, improve cargo handling and strengthen the country’s ability to compete for regional trade.

Karachi Port and Port Qasim collectively have the capacity to handle more than 100 million tonnes of cargo annually. Their strategic locations give Pakistan significant potential to expand its role in regional trade and shipping.

The ongoing reforms are focused on improving port infrastructure, streamlining operational procedures and introducing more efficient systems. Modern facilities are expected to enhance cargo movement and make Pakistan’s ports more attractive to international shipping and logistics companies.

Officials believe the improvements could help Pakistan develop into a stronger regional transshipment hub, connecting international trade routes with markets in South Asia and beyond.
