A tourist helicopter crashed in northern Kenya on Wednesday, killing all seven people on board, including five American citizens and a prominent media executive, according to authorities.
The helicopter was reportedly flying from Loisaba Conservancy toward the Ewaso Ng’iro area in Samburu County when it crashed at around 9:13 a.m. The accident occurred near Mount Ololokwe, a well-known tourist destination in the region.
Six tourists and the pilot were on board the aircraft. Rescue teams, the Kenya Red Cross and other emergency organisations reached the crash site, but no one survived the accident.
The US State Department confirmed that five American nationals were among those killed. One of the victims was identified as 55-year-old José Alberto Suárez, a senior figure in the television broadcasting industry.
Suárez was reportedly a senior executive at Telemundo and had served as president and general manager of several of the network’s stations in Florida. He was a recognised figure in the broadcasting sector and had received several honours during his career in the media industry.
Luxury safari operator and beyond also confirmed that the helicopter had been carrying its guests. The company operates tourism experiences in several African destinations, including safari excursions that can involve aerial transportation.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established. Kenya’s aviation authorities have launched an investigation to determine what led to the helicopter going down.
The crash occurred in a remote and difficult-to-access part of Samburu County, creating additional challenges for emergency and recovery teams. Authorities are expected to examine the aircraft, weather conditions, flight records and other relevant factors as part of the investigation.
Kenya is a major international tourism destination, particularly known for its wildlife reserves and safari experiences. Helicopter and other aerial services are sometimes used to transport visitors to remote conservation areas and tourist destinations.
The deaths have prompted attention both in Kenya and the United States, particularly because of the number of American nationals involved and the loss of a prominent broadcasting executive.
Further details about the crash and the identities of the other victims are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
