PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) alert for the province’s northern districts, warning that rising temperatures and intense heat could trigger flash floods and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.
According to the PDMA, the rapid melting of glaciers due to the ongoing heatwave has increased the risk of glacial lakes bursting, posing a threat to nearby communities and infrastructure.
The authority has directed the district administrations of Upper and Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan, and Mansehra to implement precautionary measures and remain on high alert. Local authorities have also been instructed to closely monitor glacial regions and respond swiftly to any emerging threats.
Rescue agencies, emergency personnel, and essential machinery have been placed on standby to deal with any potential emergency. District administrations have been advised to inform residents living in high-risk areas and, if necessary, relocate them to safer locations.
The PDMA has urged tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous regions and stay away from rivers, streams, and glacial zones during the warning period. Residents have also been advised to avoid flood channels and fast-flowing water during rainfall to reduce the risk of accidents.
The disaster management authority said citizens should immediately report any emergency to the PDMA helpline 1700 to ensure a timely rescue and response.
