LAHORE: The Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) has constituted a committee to address environmental protection and climate change-related issues and promote greater awareness of environmental law among the legal community.
According to a notification issued by the LHCBA, Sardar Aasif Ali Sial has been appointed chairman of the newly formed Environmental Protection and Climate Change Committee following recommendations from the competent authorities.
The committee has been tasked with preparing a comprehensive climate change mitigation programme for the Lahore High Court Bar Association as well as district and tehsil-level bar associations. The initiative is aimed at encouraging the legal community to play a more active role in addressing environmental challenges and understanding the legal implications of climate change.
A meeting of the committee has also been scheduled for Friday, during which members are expected to discuss the proposed programme, its objectives and future activities. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to outline measures for increasing awareness about environmental protection and climate-related legal issues among lawyers.
Sardar Aasif Ali Sial is an environmental and climate change lawyer and policy expert with experience in areas related to environmental protection, climate justice and sustainable development. According to information shared about his academic and professional background, he received advanced education from the University of California, Berkeley, focusing on areas including sustainable environmental management, environmental auditing, climate finance and carbon credits.
His professional work has covered a range of climate-related issues, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, technology transfer, climate finance and environmental protection. He has also worked on matters involving the Green Climate Fund, Loss and Damage Fund, climate budgeting and climate jurisprudence.
Sial has also established Salkon International, a consultancy services organisation that works in areas including environmental management, sustainable development, carbon credits, climate consultancy and environmental protection. According to information shared at a briefing, the organisation has offices in Lahore, Islamabad, the United Kingdom and San Francisco.
The newly established committee is expected to strengthen awareness among lawyers regarding climate change, environmental legislation and related policy matters. It could also provide bar associations with greater understanding of the legal and institutional challenges emerging from climate-related issues.
Another component of the initiative is an internship programme to be organised in collaboration with universities. Students from different educational institutions will have an opportunity to participate and gain practical exposure to environmental protection, climate policy and related legal matters.
The internship initiative is intended to help equip young people with practical knowledge and experience in fields connected with sustainable development and environmental protection. It may also create opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in environmental law, climate policy and sustainability.
Pakistan is increasingly facing the effects of climate change, including extreme weather events, heatwaves, water shortages and other environmental pressures. Legal experts have stressed the importance of strengthening knowledge of environmental laws and climate policies to improve the country’s ability to respond to these challenges.
Through the new committee and its proposed programmes, the LHCBA aims to encourage greater engagement of the legal community in environmental protection and climate-related matters.
